The Higonokami knife is a traditional and historic Japanese friction folding pocketknife that first appeared over 130 years ago in 1896. After the Samurai class was abolished in the late 1800s there was no longer a demand for swordsmiths to make their famous Katana swords. The highly skilled blacksmiths had to find other products to make and so the Higonokami knife was born.

It gained extreme popularity in Japan’s working-class and was even carried by school children for sharpening pencils. It has since become an iconic and protected Japanese product.
